Paris, May 6, 2026 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate won the position of First Vice President of the International Federation of Journalists, represented by the head of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, Nasser Abu Bakr, on Wednesday, during the proceedings of the World Conference held in Paris, with broad participation from journalists’ unions and syndicates from various countries around the world .
This victory comes as a culmination of the efforts of the Palestinian delegation participating in the conference, which witnessed extensive discussions on the conditions of journalists in conflict zones, ways to enhance international protection for media workers, in addition to issues of press freedom and trade union solidarity at the international level .
This victory is seen as a major moral triumph for the sacrifices of Palestinian journalists, and a clear message of support from journalists around the world for Palestine, especially in light of the grave dangers faced by journalists in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank while performing their professional duties, reflecting the extent of international solidarity with their cause and rights .
Abu Bakr stressed that the re-election of Palestine to this leadership position reflects renewed international confidence in the role of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and strengthens its presence within global union frameworks, in light of the challenges and violations faced by Palestinian journalists while performing their work .
He pointed out that this victory will contribute to strengthening the voice of Palestinian journalists on international platforms, and pushing for more pressure to provide them with protection and hold perpetrators of violations against them accountable, especially in light of the escalating targeting of journalists in the Palestinian territories .
The conference witnessed the election of a new leadership for the union, along with the adoption of a set of recommendations related to strengthening the rights of journalists, improving their working conditions, and addressing the challenges associated with digital transformations and the spread of misinformation .
The Palestinian delegation included members of the administrative council and the general secretariat of the union, namely: Bilal Ghaith Kaswani, Ayman Al-Nubani, Youssef Habash, Rima Al-Amleh, and Wissam Yassin .
The International Federation of Journalists is one of the world’s largest trade union organizations, with hundreds of thousands of journalists as members across national unions and federations in more than 140 countries, and plays a pivotal role in defending press freedom and the rights of journalists around the world .
This victory comes in the context of the increasing presence of Palestine within international institutions, and in light of continuous efforts to enhance Palestinian representation in global professional bodies, in a way that serves the issues of journalists and supports their struggle for freedom of journalistic work .
