Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden said on Thursday that his country’s recognition of a Palestinian state aims to achieve peace in the Middle East and serves as a direct message to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the need for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Frieden added in press statements that what is happening in Gaza is “unacceptable,” noting that recognition of a Palestinian state is part of the roadmap approved by the New York meeting for achieving peace.
The Prime Minister emphasized his country’s rejection of the policy of starving the population of the Gaza Strip, saying, “I call on all Israelis to ensure that Palestinians are not starved.” He also emphasized that his government supports imposing a package of sanctions on the occupation government, but that it requires a unanimous decision within the European Union.
