Khader Adnan, the commander of the Islamic Jihad movement who was held captive, died today, on Tuesday, in an Israeli occupation jail.

Adnan, the martyr, participated in six hunger strikes while he was repeatedly detained:

2004 He engaged in a 25-day strike to express his displeasure with his isolation.

2012 He went on strike for 66 days, winning his release in the process.

2015 He went on strike for 52 days, winning his release in the process.

2018 He went on strike for 59 days and took away his freedom at that time.

2021 He took away his freedom after a 25-day strike.

2023 He spent 86 days on an indefinite hunger strike before rising to martyrdom.

Origin and birth

On March 24, 1978, Khader Adnan Musa was born in the Palestinian town of Arraba (Jenin Governorate, in the northern West Bank).

In his hometown of Arraba, he finished primary and secondary school, passing the latter with an excellent grade in 1996. He then enrolled at Birzeit University in Ramallah, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economic mathematics in 2001. He later enrolled in the same university’s master’s program, majoring in economics.

political background

Khader Adnan joined the Islamic Jihad movement during his undergraduate studies and began his political career at a young age. When French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin visited Birzeit University in 1998, the Palestinian Authority accused him of inciting people to throw stones at him. This led to his first imprisonment. He went on a hunger strike for ten days while being held.

During his time at college, he was detained by Israeli occupation authorities and held in administrative detention for four months (without being charged). He was then detained once more for a year.

After the study phase, he was detained more than ten times for a total of more than six years, including detention from March 5, 2004, to April 11, 2005, during which he participated in an open hunger strike for 28 days in opposition to his seclusion. Before he agreed to be moved to the regular prison sections with the other inmates, he did not end his strike.

In October 2010, the Palestinian Authority again detained him, and he was imprisoned for 12 days while engaging in a hunger strike.

The most well-known arrest of Khader occurred on December 17, 2011, when he began a hunger strike inside an Israeli prison in opposition to his unjust administrative detention. The strike, which lasted 65 days, came to an end on April 17, 2012, when his petition for his release was granted.

Individual strikes persisted as numerous administrative inmates followed him, including Hassan Al-Safadi, Bilal Diab, Thaer Halahleh, and Hana Al-Shalabi, who went on strike for 44 days, as well as for 78 days.

After being freed, the Palestinian leader participated in strikes and solidarity with prisoners, as well as peaceful activities, up until the Israeli occupation army ambushed him at a checkpoint south of Jenin in early July 2014. This was because the Palestinian leader had praised the resistance in several media statements. Israel’s onslaught against the Gaza Strip is resisted by Palestine.

On July 11, 2015, the Israeli government freed him. He then traveled to the Jenin neighborhood’s hamlet of Arraba, where he was welcomed by sizable crowds.

Sheikh Adnan was once again detained by the occupation on February 5 of last year when he broke into his home in Arraba and caused mayhem, declaring at the time that he had entered a hunger strike up till his 86th day of life.
