Adnan Abu Hasna, spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said on Sunday that what is happening in Gaza City is the most dangerous since the war began on October 7, 2023.
“There are now about one million Palestinians in Gaza City, being pushed into an area of less than 20 square kilometers,” Abu Hasna said in an interview with Al Jazeera.
He added, “People are still not leaving the city for the southern Gaza Strip in large numbers for several reasons. First, they don’t have the money, and second, there are no places for them in the southern Gaza Strip. In addition, people are exhausted and hungry and cannot move from the north to the south.”
Abu Hasna added, “In addition, the residents of Gaza City had a bitter experience when they were in the southern Gaza Strip after being displaced there at the beginning of the war, before being allowed to return to the northern Gaza Strip last January.”
He continued, “There is a near-total collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza City, and the spaces for humanitarian work in the city are being restricted.”
Abu Hasna stressed that “municipal services in Gaza City are almost non-existent.
