Two experts in prisoners’ affairs and law warn of the catastrophic risks of the “execution of Palestinian prisoners” law, and do not rule out its implementation in the coming period, despite Israeli reservations about this, due to Israel’s distorted international image.
The two experts agree that this law represents “organized state terrorism” and a consecration of the field killing policies practiced by the occupation for decades, but this time with a legal cover.
Salah Abdel-Aati, head of the International Commission to Support the Rights of the Palestinian People (ICSPR), told Safa News Agency that the final ratification of the law is a very dangerous escalation that legitimizes extrajudicial killings and threatens the lives of thousands of prisoners.
He explains that the passage of the law, despite international warnings, reflects the occupation’s insistence on defying international will and disavowing its obligations under international humanitarian law.
He asserts that the law is based on criminal dimensions, namely the mandatory imposition of the death penalty without the need for a consensus of judges, which undermines the guarantees of a fair trial.
criminal pillars
He adds that the law is also based on rapid implementation within 90 days, which deprives prisoners of the right to appeal and legal review, and the absence of pardon means turning the punishment into a tool of political revenge that has no relation to justice.
Abdel-Aati emphasizes that the implementation of the law constitutes a war crime and a crime against humanity, for which the Israeli government and its Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, are responsible. They are responsible for the policies of abuse and torture that have led to the martyrdom of more than 100 prisoners during the last two years.
Legal cover for historical crimes
For his part, prisoner affairs expert Abdul Nasser Farwana asserts that the current debate gives observers a false impression that “Israel” is reactivating a cancelled punishment.
In an interview with Safa News Agency, he says that the facts confirm that it has been carrying out assassinations and field executions since its occupation of the Palestinian territories as an alternative to arrest.
He explains that this project may soon become an effective law to appease the extreme right, and in line with a security vision that considers prisoner exchange deals to weaken deterrence.
He points out that a broad current in Israeli society sees the events of October 7 as an opportunity to pass the law and apply it to prisoners from the Gaza Strip, while trying to liken their actions to the “Holocaust” to facilitate its passage internationally.
Dangerous dimensions of a bloody reality
Frawaneh warns that passing the law will lead to a new and more painful reality, in which human rights efforts will be limited to monitoring death sentences and counting martyrs, recalling that the occupation has previously executed hundreds of Palestinians through live ammunition or slow killing through torture and medical neglect.
He points out that this law is nothing but an institutionalization of the murders documented by video cameras and prisoners’ testimonies, while the occupation is still waiting to be held accountable for all the execution crimes against the Palestinian people, amid international silence for which Palestinian civilians are paying the price.
The Israeli Knesset approved on Monday, in its final reading, a law that stipulates the execution of Palestinian prisoners, while the extremist “Ben Gvir”, the author of the law, said that the application will apply to most prisoners and will not exclude anyone.#ExecutionLaw
