The President mourns the passing of the great Palestinian historian and thinker, Professor Walid Khalidi
Ramallah, March 8, 2026 (WAFA) – President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas mourned to the Palestinian people and to the academic and cultural circles in the world, with great sadness and sorrow, the passing of the great Palestinian historian and thinker, Professor Walid Ahmed Sameh Khalidi, who passed away in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, at the age of 101, after a life full of scientific, intellectual and national contributions .
His Excellency praised the deceased’s virtues, his efforts, and his experience full of giving and dedication in serving his people and their just cause, and said: “The deceased was one of the most prominent Palestinian and Arab historians, and one of the leading figures of contemporary historical thought and research, as he dedicated his life to defending the Palestinian historical narrative and documenting the history of Palestine and its people, and contributed through his research and sound writings to consolidating the Palestinian historical truth in international academic circles. He also had a pioneering role in establishing the Institute for Palestine Studies in Beirut.”
His Excellency had honored the late Al-Khalidi with the Star of Honor of the State of Palestine, the highest class, in 2015, for his distinguished scientific contributions, which formed a fundamental reference for researchers and scholars in the history of Palestine and the Middle East, as he left a rich scientific legacy that will remain a testament to his deep commitment to the cause of his people and their right to freedom and independence .
The President offered his sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, and to his colleagues, students and loved ones in Palestine and the world, and prayed to God Almighty to have mercy on him, to grant him a place in Paradise, and to inspire his family and loved ones with patience and solace.
