The Palestinian Prisoners’ Affairs Commission revealed on Monday a dangerous escalation in Israeli occupation practices against prisoners inside Gilboa Prison. In a statement, the Commission indicated that repression units continue to storm prisoners’ rooms and brutally assault them on a daily basis, under flimsy and unjustified pretexts. The committee’s lawyer said that the prison guards stormed the rooms after throwing sound bombs and tear gas, before assaulting the prisoners with batons, staplers, leather scrapers, and police dogs, in addition to spraying them with tear gas and electrocuting them. These are systematic torture methods that have become widespread and ongoing inside the prison. She added that prisoners are currently suffering from harsh weather conditions, with temperatures in the Beit Shean area, where Gilboa Prison is located, exceeding 45 degrees Celsius, amid stifling overcrowding, poor ventilation, and a lack of even the most basic humane requirements. The lawyer quoted the prisoners as saying they were unable to sleep due to the intense heat, and that the mattresses were soaked with sweat due to the high temperatures. In a related context, prisoner Fadi Awda Khalil Ali (41 years old) from Nour Shams camp in Tulkarm suffers from complete hemiplegia and uses a wheelchair, which has caused him serious physical ulcers due to lack of movement and constant sitting. It is noteworthy that Ali has been detained since 12/26/2023, and no verdict has been issued against him yet.As for prisoner Mahmoud Mukhlis Al-Kayyal (31 years old) from the city of Nablus, he suffers from chest crises, shortness of breath, and sinusitis, in addition to losing about 20 kilograms of his weight since the beginning of the war, as a result of malnutrition and deliberate medical neglect.Kayal was arrested on February 21, 2023, and no verdict has yet been issued against him. A court session is scheduled for him on October 21, 2025.The Commission emphasized that the ongoing situation inside Israeli prisons requires urgent action by international human rights organizations to put an end to these ongoing violations and ensure legal and humanitarian protection for Palestinian prisoners.
