Hamas executed five Palestinians in Gaza, two for Israel collaboration

Gaza’s ruling Hamas movement says it has executed five Palestinians, including two for “collaboration” with Israel.
Sunday’s execution took place in a coastal enclave for the first time in over five years.
“On Sunday morning, two people convicted of collaborating in the (Israeli) occupation and three others were sentenced to death in criminal cases,” Hamas said in a statement.
The statement said the accused had previously been granted “full rights of self-defense”.
Hamas’ interior ministry provided the initials and years of birth of his five Palestinians who were executed, but not their full names. Two men, born in 1978 and 1968, were said to have been executed for collaborating with Israel.
The older of the two lived in Khan Younis, south of the blockaded Gaza Strip. Hamas said it had been convicted in 1991 of providing Israel with “information about the rebels, their whereabouts, and the location of their rocket launchers.”
A second was convicted of providing information to Israel in 2001, “leading to the targeting and martyrdom of civilians,” the statement added.
The other three executed were convicted of murder, it said. years of execution
Hamas has handed out dozens of death sentences for “collaborating” with Israel in recent years, but Sunday’s execution was the first since May 2017.
Three Palestinians – Ashraf Abu Leila, Hisham al-Alour and Abdallah al-Nashar – were subsequently executed for their involvement in the assassination of a Hamas military leader.
Men were publicly executed and hundreds of people watched the execution.
They had been arrested just weeks earlier in the assassination of Mazen Faka, who was allegedly shot for Israel.
Hamas keeps the death penalty in its legal books, but Palestinian officials in the occupied West Bank have not carried out executions in recent years. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, based in the West Bank city of Ramallah, signed the UN Convention to abolish the death penalty.
Abbas’ Fatah movement and Hamas have been divided since fighting broke out between the two in 2007.
The Palestinian Authority operates in the West Bank, home to approximately 3 million Palestinians who live with 475,000 Israeli settlers.
Hamas, meanwhile, controls his more than 2.3 million Palestinians who have been living under an Israeli-led blockade for 15 years.
